Creating the main character
The main message I was working with was solitude, the game of life, and also how the current generation of millennials are living.
I want to highlight that the work I produced for this project is mainly on the development. This means I focused on the research and illustration more heavily than my final outcome.
The short film i produced was the first time I have ever shot anything.
It turned out well, but I hope i can finish it to it's true form. As i was in foundation when i created it, I was really developing and studying my skills.
As you look through "The Seed of Acceptance" pages you will find that the story and meaning does not completely come across as clear in the film I produced.
It was not clear as I had a small amount of time to create the costumes, research millennials and their habits, and produce the music (which I was then not allowed to use by the musicians as they wanted it for themselves.)
I am skilled in illustration and textiles, and recently like to play around with photography and film, using a 'Outsiders' approach to both photography and film as i have never been trained.
This page shows you how i used a 1950's housewife look to portray the narcissistic habits of millennials.
In 2 days I created 2 dresses.
One was a cotton candy, striped 1950's housewife dress, and another being a shorted ballgown.
I only ended up using the striped dress as I had limited time to shoot the scenes.
It was incredibly stressful and often I had to stray from the pattern directions and just sewed what worked. The dresses came out very presentable for film, but not practical for everyday normal use.
Originally the pattern was a dress, however I altered it to be a crop top and a dress. Just to appear a tad more modern.
Creating the costumes myself added a sentimental touch to it. I also got to spend time with my Nan and went through her old photographs of the outfits she made in the 1950's.
Although I keep reminding you that the final cut of the film is unfinished, I feel that the effort I went into of sewing, drawing, daydreaming about the story, has just inspired me to keep going and acknowledge that the first film i make isn't going to amazing and everything I thought.
Creating the costumes
The yellow ballgown dress is lopsided. I had great difficulty sewing it all on because of the amount of fabric! I untacked it and sewed at least 7 times! In the end I didn't use it because of lack of time to shoot the scenes, but I actually enjoy the fact it is lopsides as it looks quite quirky to me. It also makes me laugh how frustrated it made me.
I had actually intended for the ballgown dress to be the main costume, however the striped co ord had a better reaction from everyone. So natrually I wanted to please the audience and went with the most liked.
Although I did put more effort into the dress I never ended up using on screen, I think it was a good decision.
Here on the left are my original sketches for the type of dress I wanted to create before finding a similar pattern.
This costume was for a scene too dark to film. If you go to my story board button for "The Seed of Acceptance" you will find the boards for the story.
It was important to me to have accessories as it made the outfit more 'proper.' and not just thrown together.
I bought a cheap wig from amazon costing around £3.00 and styled it myself.
I also found some 'afternoon tea' style gloves in a charity shop, and used one of my own sunglasses to give it that put together woman of the 1950's look.
Adding a scarf on the head, which was popular at this time, would of also been a look to consider, as with sunglasses it can seen as mysterious as she has something to hide.
Just chill
Please spend your time looking at this piece as theres many areas linking into another in it
I drew this piece from a Philippe Halsman photograph. It's what sparked me to actually create this entire project as originally I spent a lot of time working into medieval fresco paintings and their interesting extra-terrestrial characters.
The woman is only smoking a cigarette but she looks 'really done' with a situation, but also posing in a dramatic manner.
My character is based off from this photograph, and the backstory i created from just the vibes and what I branched off from the feelings I get when viewing this piece.
Combining this image and solitude, I put together my character, of which does not have a name.
I had plans for calling her Suzy, but nothing official was placed.
I hope when I grow more as an artist to return back to this project and evolve on it, using my new skills and more open mind.
